Statement on Protections for Individuals with Pre-existing Conditions

Partners for Better Care stands firmly with its members and patients across the country in urging the Administration to defend existing patient protections and ensure that all Americans have access to affordable health care coverage, including people with chronic and pre-existing medical conditions. Partners supports access to quality care by preventing pre-existing conditions and rating restrictions. PBC works to ensure that all individuals, particularly those with chronic conditions, cannot be denied coverage, charged unreasonable premiums or denied renewability.

On June 8th, the Justice Department stated in a court filing that it will not defend existing legal protections for patients, including the ban on denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions, and the ban on charging individuals with pre-existing conditions more for coverage. This news is troubling for more than a quarter of all non-elderly adults in the US living with a pre-existing condition.

Partners also echoes the concerns expressed by insurers finalizing rates for 2019 that this action will create additional uncertainty in the market, which will result in increased premiums.

Partners and its members believe that every American should have access to affordable, high-quality, patient-centered coverage. We urge Congress, the Administration, and leaders on both sides of the aisle to ensure that the health system works for all Americans, especially those living with debilitating conditions.
